1. Happy Birthday Tacuma.

Yesterday. But regardless, a happy one all the same. For those who don’t know about the storied Tacuma Bradley, I’d like to first point out that he is, in fact, storied. Second, he’s one of the best people I’ve ever met in my life, ergo the acclaim.

Tacuma is a pediatric nurse at NY Presbyterian by day and an unequivocally talented tenor sax player every other hour of it. Half my musical inspiration and half my musical sage on a mountain, I look up and respect him to no end as a musician and as a human. Not many people are sweeter than Tacuma. Don’t tell him I said that. Most men don’t like to be described as sweet, but if the shoe fits, by all means.

Humility, confidence, and motion personify Tacuma and the majority of people he surrounds himself with. I don’t even know why he associates with  loquacious, half hippie scum like me. Lucky I guess.

These photos are from a Sunday session. The first one is Daniel, an extremely talented jazz trumpet player. Educated in his craft and naturally gifted, he puts many horn players twice his age to shame. The second is Kinchasa, who hosts Sunday jazz in one of the most beautiful and good feeling homes I’ve ever set foot in. A renaissance man, he put together and built most of the furnishings by hand. His wife Mimi is a DJ for the local NPR station and has quite a reputation herself. Both of them were involved in the jazz scene and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s. Incredible people to be around. Tacuma graces the last photo, blowin like he does. He’s currently involved with a few musical projects, my favorite of them being Mammarazzi, an eclectic grouping of auspicious musicians, blending afro beat, and cerebral groove. I’ve spoken on them before, but check them out.
