Bombino. New York 2012
Bombino is a rare kind of artist. He is from Niger, and part of the Taureg, a nomadic tribe that has undergone much repression and a mighty struggle for its independence. His bluesy, desert rock feels rootsy, yet transcendental. His riffs are raw and poignant, and his spirit has turned him a beacon of light. He and his guitar are some of the heaviest weapons in the fight against the government, and they realize this, targeting he and his band members, killing two, and sending Bombino into hiding.
This conflict has propelled the young guitarist/singer into the international spotlight, and rightfully so. His story, and his talent, are truly worth witnessing. He is currently on tour in North America. We just got a chance to meet him in NY. He and his band are humble, bright, happy and courageous. If you can, see them in a city near you.
This photo is from the shoot we did with them on NYC’s highline. More to come!
